Farewell Treasured Friend

On Tuesday, February 5th we had to say goodbye to our sweet Toonces. It was something we have known was looming since she was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure several years ago and then kidney failure secondary to the heart medication two years ago. I guess part of me hoped she could somehow live until I was ready to let her to go. After 14 plus years of friendship I'm not sure I would have ever been ready. She had been a touchstone for me through every one of my life transitions as an adult. The look of "Mommy worship" (as Dave called it) that she would give me will live in my memory forever.

Dave had adopted her as his own and never treated her like a step cat. She loved him too they would often hang out on the sofa together watching TV or hog the bed (mostly Toonces) resulting in me sleeping on a tiny piece or twisted into a pretzel position.

Gracie too had come to love our little furry baby. She would happily knock on the door when she and Dave arrived home and say "Cat!" to tell her that they were home. She had gotten so good a gentle pets that sometimes Toonces would mistake it for me petting her, though once she realized it was Gracie she would make a quick exit. Gracie had even taken to calling Toonces by name. "Tooncey where are you?" she would call in her little baby voice. It appeared to serve mostly as a good warning for Toonces, whose vision had deteriorated, to steer clear of the area but it was most endearing.

Our home and our hearts will never quite be the same without her.

Laura and Dave,

I am so sorry to hear about Toonces. I know she was a great companion and friend to you both. I still have a picture of her wearing reindeer ears on my fridge:-) I'm sure you will have other family pets, but there can only ever be one Toonces and a little piece of her will be in your hearts always. Sending hugs and purrs to all,

Meredith (MacKay) aka the Crazy Cat Lady of GMUSL

My heart goes out to you guys for I know she will be greatly missed. I believed she loved being your Toonces as much as you loved having her as your Toonces.

I'll always remember the times that I stayed with you guys when she would come in and check on me while I was sleeping. I think she was making sure I was on my best behavior while I was in her home. I'm sure when I visit in the future she will be looking down to make sure I still behave.

Dear Laura, Dave & Gracie,

Sending you all my deepest sympathies for the loss of Toonces. Having struggled w/similar health issues in caring for our family cat Oli, I really feel for you and for the loss of such a treasured family member (Even years after losing Oli, I still get misty-eyed thinking of him). From everything you write, and every story you've told us, we know Toonces was so loved by you all (including Gracie!) and lived a happy and full life, which is all any of us could ask for in the end. I will continue to keep Toonces' famous xmas pic on my fridge in honor of that happy and full life :-)
xxoo, Kymny
